Albrecht Dürer, Der Zeichner des liegenden Weibes, 1525

Dürer
What happens in front of the painter? A naked woman wiggles in a pose that implies continuous movement. she is unusually active and lively, very different from the conventional condition of stasis and immobility required to a model to be painted. instead, the one who is motionless is the artist, caged in a structure that forces him in a fixed position, focusing on the the exact timeless point in order to stop reality; despite the avant-garde attempts to introduce the fourth temporal dimension, only the cinema has been able to take advantage of it.
Dürer's demon is obviously the need for a temporal art capable to show and rewrite the transient, demonstrating the theory that, despite the mechanical-optical devices for imagining a presumed ideal stillness, reality is always absolutely different from its representation. Only photography has been able to sanction the possibility of reifying the world by killing time with instantaneousness; painting is not given by statute.“L’Alemano confidommi che tra le sue macchine per disegnare, questa fusse come una gogna del pittore,
la tortura di coglier ‘l vero mobile”
